Vehicle API – CarMD

CarMD is now offering v3 of our APIs. After listening to user feedback CarMD has remade our Vehicle APIs to be lightweight and user friendy.

API Overview

VIN Decode (API)

This service provides decoded VIN information such as year, make, model, and engine.

OBD Port Location (API)

This servce provides a vehicle’s port location for plugging in diagnostic tools or dongles. This is a turnkey services that offers an image of the location on the dashboard and an image of the port itself.

Vehicle Maintenance (API)

This service provides a list of a vehicle’s maintenance items at a specific mileage.

Vehicle Repair (API)

This service provides repair information based on a vehicle’s check engine light code. Providing the DTC and mileage will yeild information such as recommended repairs, cost of repairs, difficulty of repair, and duration of repair.

Code Definitions / DTC Definitions (API)

This service provides vehicle diagnostic code definitions. Includes additional information such as the urgency of the issue, the effect this issue has on this vehicle, and the laymen’s version of the code definition.

Upcoming Repairs / Predicting Vehicle Breakdowns / Predictive Diagnostics (API)

This service provides the odds a vehicle will have a specific failure within the next 12 months.

Vehicle Technical Service Bulletins (API)

This service provides Technical Service Bulletins PDFs as well as short text summaries. These bulletins are recommended repair procedures for vehicles and are not NHTSA Safety Recalls. Although some OEMs may offer to cover a repair described in a TSB if the vehicle meets certain criteria.

Safety Recalls (API)

This service provides a list of all safety recalls on a vehicle.

Vehicle Warranty (API)

This service provides the list of warranties on this vehicle.

Vehicle Images (API)

This service provides an image the vehicle.

Testing the APIs

As a quick overview on testing the APIs – it requires registering for an account which only takes a second. And a download of a chrome plugin so requests can be made to CarMD for the data.

Credits

Each API has a different credit cost and each request made to the APIs will charge credits.

To help users get a feel for the APIs, every account is provided an initial number of free credits. Allowing users to test several APIs for free. Additionally, for low volume users, every account is provided a free monthly deposit of credits.

Credit fees of each service can be found in your account through this link or clicking on your email in the upper right, and clicking on Request Fees.

To avoid getting charged for instances where the API does not have enough data – First use the /fields endpoint to verify CarMD has data before calling the API endpoint.
